And that brings me to my first major of two tenets of "Half the Sky"...
-
...and that is that the central, moral challenge of this century is gender inequity.
-
In the 19th century, it was slavery.
-
In the 20th century, it was totalitarianism.
-
The cause of our time is the brutality that so many people face around the world because of their gender.
-
So, some of you may be thinking, "Gosh, that's hyperbole."
-
"She's exaggerating."
-
Well, let me ask you this question.
-
How many of you think there are more males or more females in the world?
-
Let me take a poll.
-
How many of you think there are more males in the world?
-
Hands up, please.
-
How many of you think...
-
A few.
-
How many of you think there are more females in the world?
-
Okay, most of you.
-
Well you know this latter group, you're wrong.
-
There are, true enough in Europe, in the West,...
-
...when women and men have equal access to food and health care,...
-
...there are more women, we live longer.
-
But in most of the rest of the world, that's not the case.
-
In fact, demographers have shown that there are anywhere between 60 million and 100 million...
-
...missing females in the current population.

I bought the book "Half the Sky" and now just finished reading Chapter one. Then I see that I had misunderstood what she meant. It seems this is a great book, in which the authors report not only about women's plight but also more about their emancipation and empowerment: `Women aren't the problem but the solution', they say. The final part of the book contains useful information about concrete actions that we can do soon.
i definately agree with her opinion. if we assume that famales take part of half of the population of the world, their right should be more protected and recovered. there are so many gender inequity in every countries. it has a deep root which is incised by cultural and traditional human history. that it why we should be try more longer effort to overcome this inequity.
good...I like it
i think to appreciate that I bore in this age.
in the past so many female suffered, like rape, assult ete..
But, now anywhere in our world some females are suffering.

It can spark severe debate~haha
This video has just one part of presentation~
So she looks like having a extreme view without any proper reasons.
Perhaps her last remark is based on some works by an economist Amartya Sen, who wrote an article titled "More Than 100 Million Women Are Missing".
I agree that resolving the problems of gender inequity is very important. But I can't agree with her idea `the central moral challenge of the century'. Such an idea may conceal other problems. For example, problems of human trafficking and slavery are also exist now, not only in 19th century.
juyon is korean guy.so,he is damn
This is true. In most of Asia, most women get gender inequity including unindustrial countries, especially, China, India, Korea, and South Asia.
Tell me why she is interested only about backward countries? In my country there is much more women than man. And nobody takes care.
She is right !!
Hmm .........
